Labs @ SUNUM Facility

Sabanci university Nanotechnology Research and Application Center(SUNUM) has some facilities for antenna and high frequency measurements. Millimeter wave technology brings about many promising feature such as possibility of high speed communication, less interference, etc. However, conducting experiments at this frequency band requires high precision devices and also professional operator. Sabanci University antenna and RF group seeks to fulfill these necessities and makes reliable measurement setups. To do so, our measurement setup follows all the standard procedure in millimeter wave measurement setup. Taking advantages of high-tech measurement devices, now we are able to do measurement up to 110GHz(W-band). Below is the list of some measurement setup available at Sabanci university.

  • Anechoic chamber:

SUNUM Anechoic Chamber is a laboratory for measuring medium and low gain antennas up to 20 inches (0.5 m) in diameter. The NSI Spherical Near Field Antenna Measurement System interfaces with a wide variety of RF equipment and is capable of measuring amplitude and phase patterns from L-band to mm Wave Bands. The system includes NSI Antenna Measurement Software. Measured data can be processed for far-field or holographic patterns yielding complete characterization of the antenna’s performance. A single data set provides information on antenna gain, side lobe structure, beam pointing and cross polarization.

W-band antenna measurement setup:

This setup enables reflection coefficient, gain and far-field radiation pattern measurement. Our millimeter wave antennas are realized by printed board technology available at IHP, Germany. Outdoor antenna setup follows the conventional antenna setup procedure but the test environment is outside the anechoic chamber. So, we have the same equipment as the anechoic chamber, standard horn to receive signal, rotating arms and the like. Anyway, our setup works as below. To connect the antenna to signal source, a GSG RF probe is used. Fine adjustment is obtained by a micro positioner. On the other side is the collecting arm that receives the field radiated by antenna by mean of standard gain horn antenna. This arm solely rotates at elevation. Using two different GSG probe, AUT can be rotated 90 degree with respect to rotation plane at elevation so we can switch from E to H plane measurement and vice versa. Besides, the standard horn can be rotated in 0,90 degree with respect to collecting arm and make it possible to determine the co- and cross-polarization at E and H plane. The image shows a summary of our setup.
